At McCabe Park Little League, we want your child to have fun playing baseball at the appropriate level for them. MPLL follows the age guidelines (see the chart below) set forth by Little League International and will make every effort to keep players in the appropriate age division unless skill level and or maturity dictate otherwise.

Have questions about which division is the right one for your child? Check out the info below. You can also ask a previous coach for an honest recommendation or email us at mccabeinfo@gmail.com. Not sure whether to move your child up to the next division? Check out our FAQ.

Tee Ball (development program)

League Age* 4-6

*League Age is different than actual age. Please see the chart above.

Tee Ball is beginner baseball — the first step of learning the game. This is a fun drill-and-repetition-focused program to introduce your child to the basics. Teams of no more than 12 will play 6 vs. 6, while the other players take turns rotating to outfield stations with various drills.

  • Players will:
    • hit off the tee only
    • be introduced to the positions of the game
    • learn the bases and how to run them
    • learn the basics of throwing and catching
    • learn how to work together as a team

Commitment

Games are 45 minutes and each team will play an 8-game schedule. Games will be played on Saturdays at either McCabe Little Field or another field within our league's boundary. Teams will also practice 1 time per week.

Equipment

At minimum, each player needs a baseball glove and helmet. Personal bats and cleats are not required but recommended.

6U Coach Pitch

League Age* 5-7

*League Age is different than actual age. Please see the chart above.

6U Coach Pitch is for ballplayers with 1-2 seasons of Tee Ball experience who have a basic understanding of the structure of a baseball game and demonstrate increasing awareness and a desire to improve their baseball skills. The division will follow the same rules as the former Lower Coach Pitch division.

- This is not a competitive division, which means teams will not keep score, and there are no strike outs.

- Each team bats through the order before switching sides.

- Each player receives four pitches. If they do not make contact after four pitches, they get to hit off of a tee.

- Coaches serve as umpires and are instructed to reward defensive players by calling baserunners out when they are tagged out or put out by a force out.

A 6U Coach Pitch baseball player is ready to advance to 7U Coach Pitch when they've played at least one season of 6U, and...:

- Offensively, they typically do not require the use of the tee (i.e., fewer than once per game).

- Defensively, they understand the rules of baseball, can play a game of catch with peers with no fear of injury, and can successfully complete a throw and catch at least half of the time.

- These criteria likely to apply to 10% or fewer of League Age 6 ballplayers.

7U Coach Pitch

League Age* 6-8

*League Age is different than actual age. Please see the chart above.

7U Coach Pitch is for ballplayers with 1-2 seasons of 6U Coach Pitch experience who have a clear understanding of the rules of baseball and are prepared to play "real" baseball. The division will generally follow the rules of the former Upper Coach Pitch division, with a few modifications that decrease the level of competitiveness.

- This is a competitive division, which means teams will keep score, and there are strike outs.

- Each team bats until they commit three outs or score five (5) runs.

- Each player receives up to five pitches. A strike out is a combination of three swinging strikes.

- There are official umpires and outs will be closely monitored.

- See 7U division rules for more specifics.

A 7U Coach Pitch baseball player is ready to advance to 8U Coach Pitch when they've played at least one season of 7U, and...:
- Offensively, they are making consistent contact and strike out at a rate of less than 1 in every 3 at bats (i.e., less than once per game).
- Defensively, they demonstrate situational awareness (i.e., "I know my role on every play"), can play a game of catch with their hardest-throwing peers with no fear of injury, and successfully complete a catch and throw the majority of the time.
- These criteria likely to apply to 10% or fewer of League Age 7 ballplayers.

8U Coach Pitch

League Age* 7-9

*League Age is different than actual age. Please see the chart above.

8U Coach Pitch is for ballplayers with 1-2 seasons of 7U Coach Pitch experience who have a clear understanding of the rules of baseball and are prepared to play competitive baseball games.

- This is a competitive division, which means teams will keep score, and there are strike outs.
- Each team bats until they commit three outs or score five (5) runs.

- In the final inning, there is no run limit, but each team can only bat through its lineup once.
- Each player receives up to five pitches. A strike out is a combination of three swinging strikes.
- There are official umpires and outs will be closely monitored.

- See 8U division rules for more specifics.

Minors (Kid pitch + draft only)

League Age* 9-11

The fall season at McCabe has a heightened focus on player development, especially at the Minors and Majors levels. The league uses a different format than the spring, with the goal of fostering even more growth.

McCabe continues to see record enrollment, which is awesome. It also prompts the McCabe Board to re-think pieces of the fall format that we've used in the past. The league board is continuing to finalize those discussions. That said, we can share a few central aims for this fall:

-- Each division will have three or four weekend-long tournaments, rather than games every single week. Not only do the kids love this, but ideally it will help accommodate players who are doing other sports and activities, while also giving league families some weekends free of baseball.

-- Players will be drafted to a team that remains set for the duration of the season; however, the board is discussing mechanisms to ensure mixing of coaches and players, so it isn't identical to the spring season.

-- Players will have one team practice per week. Additionally, space permitting, the league intends to assign players to one broader "group" practice per week, involving other kids and coaches from the division. This group practice is not mandatory, but would allow players to advance their skills by practicing baseball more than once a week and receive instruction from a broader range of coaches.

Majors (Kid pitch + draft only)

League Age* 10-12

*League Age is different than actual age. Please see the chart above.

What are the five most common mistakes made when registration is open?

1. Getting distracted during the registration process and forgetting to finish.

2. Thinking you don't have to register because a coach said your child is on the roster.

3. Forgetting to register.

4. Thinking you're registered, even though you didn't get a confirmation screen/email.

5. Registering for the wrong division.
